Arca’s entry in the RIBA Competition teased apart the items in the brief to create a ‘constellation’ of components spread across the remote site.
The building was to provide a base for amateur astronomers in the Kielder Forest, to take full advantage of the low levels of light pollution from the surrounding areas. Telescope housings, computer monitoring room, toilet, plantrooms, windmill, and signage bases were split and dispersed across the hillside, then linked by ducts and walkways as required. The complex was designed to be timber, fabricated off-site, and entirely self-sufficient in power, water and waste disposal.
