The client chose the site for a new club for Ashton-under-Lyne as a former car maintenance workshop. The fitout was designed to operate both as an afternoon/early-evening bar, and as a 900-capacity club. Developing the simple idea of a route through the building, the design signalled this by a snaking red element leading from the front entrance and forming desks, bars, countertops and finally the ‘portal’ into the club proper. The large glazed wall on the main street frontage presents layers of activity – the bar at the front, the upper bar and balconies, with the club and its stage deep in the recesses of the building. Amongst this, people are on display, visible from the outside.
