The competition brief sought imaginative solutions to a wide-ranging programme including nature interpretation, shops, restaurants, conference & watersports facilities, tourist information, and a warden’s residence. Arca’s shortlisted design chose to house the functions in a family of pavilions, arranged in an arc parallel to the River Ribble. The intention was to make the process of exploring nature more inviting, easy and accessible. In addition, the pavilions solved the problem of creating a landmark by being coded with a single illuminated letter, together forming a large-scale display visible from the M6 motorway. Each shingle-clad pavilion conformed to the brief’s strict requirements for environmental sustainability and flood protection.
