  • Contract Value: £210 000

Castlefield Gallery is a unique organisation founded by Manchester artists in 1984 to promote their work to the public. Based in Castlefield, their existing premises became increasingly impractical. The opportunity to move to the lower floors of a residential building near Deansgate Station, supported by the Arts Lottery Board funds, opened up the possibility of flexible display facilities, better educational space, improved sales management, and access for all. The design developed in consultation with the artists to provides ‘white’ space for the display of work, whilst providing new kinds of display opportunities: double height volumes, moveable wall sections, and full control light conditions from natural light to total blackout. This enabled artworks in all media to be accommodated, while a large door on the glazed facade means that major pieces can also be shown.
