Cornerhouse is Manchester’s principal independent centre for creative arts, including film and fine art. Their activities occupied three buildings, and an Arts Lottery grant gave them the opportunity to enhance their work by extending into a fourth building. An existing four storey Victorian building on James Leigh Street was provided for their use by Manchester City Council. Arca’s solution at interview stage involved inserting a series of ramps to link the existing ground floor bar to a bar in the new building. This new space in turn connected to the Oxford Road station approach, increasing the visibility of the Cornerhouse at this point. The project also offered the opportunity to rationalise and improve staff facilities, and to create a better educational space – all with a view to giving Cornerhouse a bright future in the city.
