Ashton Canal Improvements
- Location: Manchester
- Programme: 2011
- Client: New East Manchester/Urban Splash
- Contract Value: £40,000
Replacing an unsafe and substandard link over the Ashton Canal, the proposed enhancements to the lock are intended to improve access between the New Islington Marina and housing, and a new Metrolink Station on Pollard Street. The briefing scheme suggested an extensive and obtrusive metal ramp to accommodate pushchairs, bikes and wheelchairs. Arca reviewed the brief and proposed a more minimal solution consisting of a crescent-shaped platform to negotiate the lock gate back beam, and a widened bridge. The metalwork was fabricated from simple steel bar sections, painted black to match the traditional canal livery.
