Selected by masterplanner Terry Farrell and Partners, Arca were one of a ten practices gathered for a 48-hour charette in London. The subject was the Lower Broughton area of Salford, deprived and with poor housing stock, but with the valuable amenity of the River Irwell.
Arca’s site on the banks of the river comprised over 200 new houses in a neighbourhood block. In order to maximise the impact of the river, a series of ‘green fingers’ of land were alternated with a regular street grid.
The houses featured a folded roof form which continued down into the landscape to form terraces, patios and other external treatments. The masterplan work was submitted as part of the overall planning application for the area, and is currently being implemented.
