Positioned on a tight suburban site set back from the road, this new detached house was designed to blend unobtrusively into its surroundings. Clad like a boarded fence or a garden shed in rough sawn timber it was conceived as part of the ‘back garden’ landscape of the neighbourhood, with a sedum roof to further reduce its impact. The form however was uncompromisingly bold – an undulating wall wrapped around the free-flowing accommodation, with a masonry ‘armature’ at in the centre. In this Y-shaped board-marked concrete core was housed both books and a fireplace forming the heart of the home, the latter a wood-burning back-boiler offering fossil-fuel free living and exceptionally low running costs.
