Historically Mill House was a component of a mill complex and Bleach Works on a bend in the Micker Brook in Cheadle. In recent years it has served as an office building, but the owner wanted to create four houses out of the structures.
Arca negotiated the difficult justification for greenbelt development, proposing a bold contemporary solution. The Corten-clad extension addresses the wooded part of the site, hovering over the brook.
Landscape was simplified with the clutter of cars tucked beneath a new ‘front lawn’ deck at the road, improving the setting of the listed building. Pedestrian access across the deck delivers visitors onto the axis of the mill house.
