The temporary move of Manchester City Council to No1 First Street – an upgraded office building in a larger future master plan – led to a request for a convenient place for staff to eat. The brief was for a cost effective, single-storey retail unit, accommodating 100 people.
The striking solution was derived from the master plan grain combined with the geometry of the edge condition to project an equilateral triangle grid over the allocated site. Five large triangular bays were formed in timber and steel, with infilled sides to vary the light and transparency from inside to outside. One triangle was left unfilled to create a covered external space, and future expansion accommodated by simply adding more bays as the need arose.
