Arca’s winning solution for a new landmark building on Morecambe’s promenade was to raise the ground level of the garden strip to create a terraced plinth for the cafe to sit upon. This enabled views of Morecambe Bay to be framed by the silver stainless steel band which wrapped the dining area. In summer the cafe seating can spill out to occupy the various levels of the terracing, animating the public space around. With a tight budget this was achieved by making the new public toilet block as simple as possible – a cuboid in black sheet steel with hardwood doors.
