Slaidburn Community Centre

  • Location: Lancashire UK
  • Programme: 2001
  • Client: Slaidburn Village
  • Contract Value: £2m

Slaidburn required a new building for their various community activities, to be sited next to a meadow on the River Hodder. Arca considered the pattern of buildings that already existed in the village, marked by their informal relationship to each other, particularly as they moved away from the main roads. The proposal was for a building that appeared as an amalgamation of smaller volumes, corresponding to the functional parts of the centre.

All the elements were gathered informally around a covered court in a manner designed to make the sequence of spaces appear natural and relaxed. The main hall opened from the court, and then out onto the meadow, raised above the flood zone and commanding views of the valley and the town bridge.
